History

The Sport Medicine Centre has a theme of excellence and leadership that translates to clinical practice, education and research within Alberta and with the rest of the world. We have some of the world’s leading experts in every area of Sport Medicine who have determined practices and standards that are emulated in other faculties around the world. The clinic has helped develop systems for more efficient healthcare by creating specialty clinics like the AKIC, Osteoarthritis, and Shoulder Clinics.   A few of our achievements:

  • Cutting edge arthroscopic surgery in the province

Parking

  • All parking on campus is controlled by the University and requires payment.
  • Click here to print a campus map.
  • The Main Entrance is located right outside the Kinesiology Complex where the red arrow is pointing.
  • Lot 16 (located right beside the clinic) has several designated parking spots available for Sport Medicine Centre visitors. This is hourly parking and it is the closest parking lot to our Clinic.
  • Lots 10 and 11 are $7.00 for daily parking.  Visitors can pay the parking attendant or use the parking meters located within the lots.

Do I need to be an athlete?

You do not need to be an athlete to be seen at the Sport Medicine Centre, however our staff do specialize in the treatment of sport related injuries and conditions

Do I need a referral?

Although the Centre is open to the general public, a referral from your family doctor is required to see a Sport Medicine Physician or Surgeon. A referral can also be given by one of the Physiotherapists at the clinic.

A referral is not required to see a Physiotherapist, but you may need a Doctor’s referral for insurance purposes. Please check with your insurance company to clarify reimbursement protocol.

Do you see WCB patients?

Yes we see WCB patients who are staff at the University of Calgary. Some exceptions can be made.

Do you communicate with other members of my health team?

With your consent, we will share our findings and progress with other members to optimize effective treatment across different areas.

What is the difference between a physician and physiotherapists?

  • A Physician is a general practitioner who specialized in sport related injuries
  • A Physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who identify health issues and offer patients a variety of treatment methods

How long does an appointment take?

There is no set appointment duration as each visit is unique as the type of appointment.  We estimate approximately: 

Doctors visit:     Initial 45 min      Follow up = 30 min
Surgeon visit:   Initial 45 min       Follow up = 30 min
Physiotherapy: Initial 40-60min  Follow up = 30 min
Nutrition:            Initial  60min       Follow up = 30 min

How much will it cost me to be seen at the Sport Medicine Centre?

  • All physician and surgeon appointments are covered by Alberta Health Care
  • Out of province patients will be charged a fee
  • Extra testing also costs an extra fee

Do you direct bill?

We do not direct bill regular Physiotherapy appointments. Patients need to pay up front and will be given detailed receipts to submit to individual insurance for coverage.
